Digital Diary - Brin's Mesa

It's been an interesting couple of weeks, that's for sure. My body clock is all sorts of out of whack, and as a result, I'm sleeping 20 hours some days and 4 hours others. I wake up at strange times in the night, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, and then I'm beat at 2:00 in the afternoon. This morning, for example, I awoke at 2:15 am and tried filling the hours as quietly and patiently as possible and ended up buying a new comforter online... At 5, I crawled back into bed and snuggled with Sam for a few minutes before he was up to work out, and then I slipped into my fleece-lined leggings and headed uptown to pick up some paperwork at the Station and watch the sun come up on a trail somewhere.

One of the perks of my new job is having every single trail in Sedona at my fingertips...I can calculate exactly how long the trail is and figure out just how to get to it. Earlier in the week, I'd set my sights on a delightful trail just up the street from the Station and decided that it would be the one I'd conquer on this chilly, misty fall morning.

Unfortunately, when I arrived at the Station to pick up my papers, the sun still wasn't due for another 45 minutes. I decided that the perfect way to kill the time was on the stairmaster downstairs, so that's just what I did. Despite roasting to death in my cozy leggings and beanie, I had an amazing warm-up and got my blood pumping enough to keep me warm as I ventured out into the dawn.

The parking lot at 6:45 a.m...just the way I like it :)
The most beautiful Manzanita I've ever seen...

Overall, I'd say I burned quite a few calories today, which is always a good thing. Plus, I got another great chance to breathe in some fresh air and clear my head...the smell of juniper and the silence are so therapeutic. I'm excited to try new hikes all through the winter - the idea being that you work up enough of a sweat on the actual hike that it doesn't seem like it's 25 degrees out. I was pretty toasty warm this morning and I'm going to guess it was only about 40 out there. Now I just have to see if I wore myself out enough to be able to sleep for a couple of hours before work tonight...
